Gifts In Kind Conference

In April, 2009, Mercy Corps sponsored a conference called Exploring Gifts-In-Kind (GIK). Gifts-In-Kind are goods and materials donated by corporations and individuals to a non-profit as part of fulfilling their mission (as opposed to something like the donation of a used car to be sold purely for its monetary value). Most of the conference was on nuts and bolts things such as recognizing GIK revenue and logistics, however, I led a track on the "Environmental Impact of Gifts-In-Kind."

I suppose there are lots of different things we could have talked about, but I focused on CO2 emissions from GIKs, particularly in their transportation, although I did talk a bit about the life cycle of computers and condoms(!).

Here's the presentation, and here's the spreadsheet I used.
